I see many advertisements (online) about meal replacement shakes for trying to lose weight.

Even better, people that try to sell me these overly expensive shakes directly.

It’s my sincere passion to learn more about everything around working out, and dieting, so I know those shakes are unnecessary.

They are most definitely not the magic formula for weight loss, and most of them are not even so healthy, or tasty for that matter.

The truth is you can make weight loss smoothies, that taste amazing, are healthy, and for a fraction of the cost.

Note: you don’t need smoothies to lose weight.

They’re only a fun addition to your diet if you like them, or out of convenience.

That being said, let’s see how you can make your new favorite weight loss smoothie with yogurt.

Four reasons I love a weight loss smoothie with yogurt

  1. It’s fast and super easy. Even though I love cooking, sometimes I don’t have the time, or I’m just too lazy. A weight loss smoothie with yogurt packs all my nutritional needs!
  2. Take it simply anywhere. I’m not a person that likes to carry food around when I’m going somewhere for the day. I don’t like meal prepping at all, so a smoothie is my way to go when I'm losing weight.
  3. Switch up the calories and macros. A weight loss smoothie with yogurt can fit in any diet on any day. 300 calories for a smoothie? Done. Do I have 400 calories to splurge around with? Awesome, switch it up a bit.
  4. Proteins for the muscles. A weight loss smoothie with yogurt is perfect to sneak in some (or a lot) of protein. This will help you retain your muscle mass, so most of the weight loss will be fat vanishing from your body.

Ingredients in your weight loss smoothie with yogurt

  • 150 grams of low-fat cottage cheese
You can use high-protein Greek yogurt
  • 15 grams of oats
    Helps to keep you full
  • 125 grams of any type of fruit
I like frozen (summer fruit) berries
  • Some spinach, kale, or other kinds of greens
  • 5 grams of cacao powder
    Super tasty superfood
  • 5 grams of peanut butter,
Substitute for any natural nut butter
  • 5 grams of chia seeds (or flax seeds)
    Absolute superfood
  • 20 grams of Isolate protein powder
You can use whey protein, vegan protein, isolate protein, etc. Isolate is most concentrated in protein.
  • 200 ml of plant-based milk (almond, cashew, or peanut are the ones I use)
You can also coconut water, skimmed milk, or get creative.
  • As many artificial sweeteners as you like (I like a lot)
    Use stevia, aspartame, sucralose, etc.
  • Ice
More volume, which is great if you’re on a lower-calorie diet.

Other things you can add:

  • All types of nuts
  • Other seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, etc)
  • Pure (80%+) chocolate
  • Peanut butter powder (lower cals)
  • Avocado (healthy fats)

Calculate the calories in your weight loss smoothie with yogurt

As described above the weight loss smoothie is 365 calories, with 38 grams of protein, 28 grams of carbohydrates (12 grams of fiber), and 9 grams of fat.

If you wish to calculate the exact amount of calories in your custom weight gain shake, but you don’t know how, well I’ve you covered.

I’ve written an in-depth article that explains how you can easily track the calories of all your foods using an app called MyFitnessPal. You can read it here.

Change the calories in your weight loss smoothie with yogurt

I completely understand that everybody has a different metabolism and personal needs for a weight loss smoothie.

Perhaps you like to replace a meal on one day, and therefore need it to be higher in calories. On another day you just like a smoothie as a snack, which means lowering the calories.

Whatever your goals, preferred taste, or amount of calories you can completely customize the weight loss smoothie.

Of course, it’s possible to change any of the ingredients or quantities, but these are the things that’ll influence the calories most in my opinion:

  • Add or remove the oats.
  • Add or remove the peanut butter or use peanut butter powder instead (lower in fats).
  • Less fruit, but more greens (lowers the calories) or more fruit (increases the calories).
  • Add or remove the cacao powder, or add real chocolate pieces if you have to calories (80%+ pure is best).
These are the things I like to play with most when varying with my weight loss smoothies.

Increase proteins in your weight loss smoothie with yogurt

The one magical thing that helps repair our muscles, and keep them from leaving our bodies during a diet.

Protein is crucial in any healthy lifestyle, but even more important when you’re trying to lose weight. With a high enough protein intake, less of the weight loss will be from muscles, which means you’ll be losing more fat.

If you want to upgrade a weight loss smoothie even further with protein (without a lot of unnecessary calories), this is what you can do:

  • Add cottage cheese or Greek yogurt
  • Add whey protein
  • Add vegan protein
  • Add isolate protein (most concentrated)

How to make a weight loss smoothie with yogurt

The one trick to make this work is a good mixer.

It’s just really simple to make a weight loss smoothie with yogurt.

All you need is a mixer that is capable of turning your ingredients into a perfectly delicious smoothie.

I start with the fruit, add some milk, then add the cottage cheese and all other ingredients.

You can do whatever you feel works for you here.

There are no rules for mixing the ideal weight loss shake.

How I take a weight loss smoothie with yogurt to the next level

If you’re able to splurge on calories just a little bit or want to make your smoothies a full-blown meal, then there’s one more thing you can do.

Add popcorn. It’s one of my favorite things in this world, and it’s super healthy, low calories, and it’s just plain-out amazing.

I love it, and it’s my mission to share this with the rest of the world. If you want to read more about why popcorn is the best fitness food, and how to make it (air-popped, low calories) at home, then read my in-depth article here.

Final words

You don’t need shakes to have a successful diet.

That being said I love a weight loss smoothie with yogurt that tastes good!

They save time, are delicious when made right, and help you keep full during the day.

You can make them a great source of protein, and customize them completely to your own specific weight loss needs.
